Seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
