As any significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
